How to shoot excellent photos – 2/3 rule

tasj4w  One of the myths surrounding the field of photography is that some people just have a knack to shoot superb photos. But in reality, those excellent photos you see are shot with a very good understanding of few principles. One such principle is the 2/3 rule or the two thirds rule. Its  a compositional principle.

You use it when you are looking through the viewfinder just before you click. Imagine two lines vertically and two lines horizontally as shown below.

According to the 2/3 rule, the highlight of the photo should be placed close one of the four intersections of the imaginary lines. In the photo above, the highlight is the sun disappearing behind the mountains. It is placed at the top-right intersection. It makes this this photo an excellent composition. If you are shooting a person, then its advisable to place them on the top two intersection points. Its known that the viewer’s eyes tend to focus these 4 intersection points easily and quickly. If the key compositional element is placed at these points, it makes the photo interesting and powerful. Try it out and i think you’ll be able to take very good pictures.
